We had a great evening at the APPNE Gala Dinner 2026, held as part of the 7th Annual Convention of the Association of Pakistani Physicians of Northern Europe (APPNE). Aghosh UK, the UK partner of Alkhidmat Foundation, booked a fundraising table at this year's gala, an occasion that brought together doctors, community leaders and charity representatives from across the UK and Northern Europe for an evening of fellowship and giving.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table to chat with the team, and to everyone who gave generously on the night in support of orphans in Pakistan and Gaza. JazakAllah khair, may Allah reward your generosity and accept it from you.

An Evening in Support of Orphans in Pakistan and Gaza

As a fundraising partner on the night, Aghosh UK was proud to take part in an evening that brought together doctors and community leaders from across the UK and Northern Europe, with fundraising running throughout. Taking a table at events like the APPNE Annual Gala matters because it brings Aghosh UK face to face with the wider British Pakistani community, many of whom already give generously through Zakat, Sadaqah and regular sponsorships. Every conversation at our table, and every donation made on the night, goes directly towards the food, healthcare, education and shelter that vulnerable children depend on through our Orphan Care Programme.

Aghosh UK's Orphan Care Programme, at a Glance

Our Orphan Care Programme currently supports orphans in Pakistan and Gaza. It provides orphaned children with quality education, full healthcare, nutritious meals and safe shelter, so that losing a parent does not also mean losing a childhood.

Orphan Care Pakistan

Sponsorship starts from £30 a month and is Zakat eligible. More than 34,000 orphans have been supported through this programme to date.

Orphan Care Gaza

Aghosh UK is also working to sponsor 5,000 orphans in Gaza, with over 1,500 children already supported through the appeal so far.

Dr Adeel Riaz on Aghosh UK's Mission

Our Chairman, Dr Adeel Riaz, addressed guests at the gala about the work of Aghosh UK - Alkhidmat Foundation and how the charity runs its Orphan Care Programme across the UK. He spoke about the partnership between Aghosh UK and Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan, and how sponsorships raised here in Britain translate into everyday essentials, school fees, medical care and safe housing, for orphaned children in Pakistan and Gaza.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
"I and the sponsor of an orphan will be like this in Paradise," and he gestured with his index and middle fingers, holding them slightly apart.
Sahih al-Bukhari, 5304

The History and Mission of APPNE

APPNE, known to its community as Team APPNE, was launched in 2019 to bring doctors and physicians of Pakistani heritage together on one platform, and held its first annual gathering in Manchester in March 2020. Since then it has grown into a democratic, representative organisation and describes itself as the voice for doctors of Pakistani heritage living in Northern Europe, with elected regional representatives across 16 UK regions and Northern Ireland. The organisation is governed by a national board chosen through democratic elections, currently led by President Dr Amir Khan for the 2023 to 2025 term, alongside a general secretary, finance secretary and a wider executive committee.

APPNE's stated mission is to support, advise and mentor its members, to raise the professional profile of doctors of Pakistani heritage, and to help develop healthcare education and infrastructure in both the UK and Pakistan. Alongside its Annual Gala and Conference, this has included an International Medical Graduate task force, career guidance and mentoring programmes, and support for the wider Pakistani-heritage medical community, including during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Team APPNE's National Board (2023 to 2025 Term)

APPNE's current national board is made up of:

  • Dr Amir Khan - President (Consultant General Surgeon)
  • Dr Nadeem Sajjad Raja - General Secretary (Consultant Microbiologist)
  • Dr Aisha Sharif - Finance Secretary
  • Dr Sohail Qureshi - Joint Secretary
  • Dr Kamila Haider - Social Secretary
  • Dr Habib Haider - Education Lead (Consultant in Acute Medicine)

They are supported by a wider executive committee: Dr Samreen Muzaffer, Dr Mukesh Kumar, Dr Amara Sohail, Dr Mazhar Sheikh, Dr Naseem Warraich, Dr Mohammad Imran, Dr Aadil Karim, Dr Wajiha Tehniyat and Dr Zafar Iqbal, alongside elected regional representatives across the UK and Northern Ireland.

Aghosh UK: Fundraising at the Gala

This year, Aghosh UK booked a fundraising table at the APPNE Gala Dinner 2026, held as part of Team APPNE's 7th Annual Convention, a natural pairing between an organisation representing Pakistani-heritage doctors across Northern Europe and a charity delivering healthcare, education and orphan care in Pakistan and Gaza. The gala regularly welcomes charities and community organisations, making it a fitting setting for Aghosh UK to share the story of the Orphan Care Programme with a wider audience.

Partnerships of this kind matter for orphaned children long after the evening ends. Awareness raised at events like this gala helps Aghosh UK reach new supporters who go on to sponsor a child, give Zakat, or simply share our appeals with their own communities.

This September, Aghosh UK took our Nasheed Nights Tour, Echoes of Kindness, to four cities across the UK, Manchester, London, Birmingham and Glasgow, bringing nasheed artists Muad and Qari Egzon Ibrahimi together for an evening of recitation, reminders and fundraising in support of orphans in Pakistan and Gaza.

At each stop, our Chairman, Dr Adeel Riaz, addressed the audience about Aghosh UK's Orphan Care Programme and how every ticket, donation and sponsorship made on the night goes directly towards the education, healthcare and shelter that orphaned children depend on. Families filled venues in all four cities for an evening that mixed moving recitation with lively, family-friendly nasheeds for younger guests.

A Night of Recitation and Remembrance

Egzon Ibrahimi, a Qur'an reciter from Kosovo known for his command of tajwid and maqam, the disciplines governing correct pronunciation and the melodic modes used in Qur'anic recitation, brought a moment of stillness to each evening. His recitation, performed in the traditional seated style, was one of the most reflective parts of the night across all four cities.

About the Scottish Muslim Awards

The Scottish Muslim Awards is an annual ceremony that recognises the achievements and talents of Muslims living and working across Scotland. The awards set out to identify role models from within Scotland's Muslim communities, in fields ranging from business and education to health, sport and community service, and to challenge Islamophobia by putting a spotlight on the positive contribution those communities make to Scottish life. Nominations are open to the public each year, with finalists and winners chosen across a range of categories before being celebrated at a ceremony bringing together community leaders, businesses and charities from across Scotland.

Zakat and Sadaqah: What’s the Difference and Why Both Matter Today

Zakat and Sadaqah – What’s the Difference and Why Both Matter Today

Zakat and Sadaqah: What’s the Difference and Why Both Matter Today

Giving is at the heart of Islam. It purifies wealth, softens hearts, and brings relief to those who are struggling. Among the many forms of charity, Zakat and Sadaqah are the most commonly discussed yet often misunderstood.

Here’s the thing. They are not the same. Each has its own purpose, rules, and impact. Understanding the difference helps you give with clarity and intention, especially when supporting urgent causes like Gaza, Pakistan, and orphan care.

Let’s break it down.

What Is Zakat?

Zakat is an obligation, not a choice.

It is one of the five pillars of Islam and becomes compulsory when a Muslim’s wealth reaches the Nisab threshold and remains in their possession for one lunar year.

Key Characteristics of Zakat

  • Mandatory for eligible Muslims
  • Fixed rate of 2.5% on qualifying assets
  • Must be given to specific categories mentioned in the Qur’an
  • Purifies wealth and redistributes it to those in need
Zakat is not just charity. It is a system of social justice.

Where Can Zakat Be Given?

Zakat must go to eligible recipients, including:

  • The poor and needy
  • Orphans without financial support
  • Widows and families with no stable income
  • Those affected by conflict, displacement, or oppression

This is why Zakat plays a critical role in Gaza, where families have lost livelihoods, homes, and loved ones. It is also vital in Pakistan, where poverty, inflation, and emergencies push millions below the survival line.

At Aghosh UK, Zakat is carefully distributed through Shariah-compliant programs, including:

  • Emergency relief for Gaza
  • Food, shelter, and medical aid in Pakistan
  • Zakat-eligible orphan care and family support

Every Zakat donation is handled with amanah and accountability.

What Is Sadaqah?

Sadaqah is voluntary. It comes from the heart.

It can be given at any time, in any amount, and to almost anyone. Even a smile is Sadaqah.

Key Characteristics of Sadaqah

  • Optional but highly rewarded
  • No fixed percentage or minimum
  • Can be given daily and repeatedly
  • Covers a wide range of good causes

Sadaqah is flexible. That’s what makes it powerful.

Where Does Sadaqah Help Most?

Sadaqah supports areas where Zakat sometimes cannot be used, such as:

  • Long-term development projects
  • Education and skill building
  • Healthcare services
  • Infrastructure and rehabilitation
  • General orphan sponsorship programs

For example:

  • Supporting orphan education and wellbeing
  • Providing winter aid and shelter
  • Funding medical assistance
  • Helping displaced families rebuild dignity

In Gaza, Sadaqah helps meet urgent needs that go beyond immediate survival. In Pakistan, it supports long-term recovery and resilience for vulnerable communities.

Why Your Giving Matters Right Now

Right now, families in Gaza are facing displacement, hunger, and trauma on a daily basis. In Pakistan, rising costs and repeated crises are pushing vulnerable families deeper into hardship. Orphans in both regions need more than sympathy. They need sustained support.

Your Zakat keeps families alive.
Your Sadaqah helps them rebuild.

Through Aghosh UK:

  • Zakat reaches those who are religiously eligible and most in need
  • Sadaqah strengthens orphan sponsorship, healthcare, and long-term relief
  • Every donation is delivered with transparency and impact

Give With Knowledge. Give With Purpose.

Islam encourages us not just to give, but to give correctly.

When you understand the difference between Zakat and Sadaqah, your charity becomes more intentional, more effective, and more rewarding.

Whether you are fulfilling your Zakat obligation or giving Sadaqah for the sake of Allah, your support through Aghosh UK is helping restore hope to orphans, families, and communities in Gaza and Pakistan.

May Allah accept your charity and multiply its reward. Ameen.

Supporting Widows and Orphans of Healthcare Workers in Gaza: A Call to Compassion

The Reality of Healthcare Workers in Gaza Today

Healthcare workers in Gaza face unimaginable challenges as they continue to serve their communities under the most difficult circumstances. Despite the constant danger, these dedicated professionals – doctors, nurses, ambulance crews, pharmacy staff, and hospital support teams – remain at their posts, treating patients under heavy bombardment.

The conditions they work under are beyond comprehension:

  • Limited pay despite extraordinarily long hours
  • Repeated forced displacement from their homes
  • Working in hospitals under frequent attack
  • Severe shortages of fuel, water, and medical supplies
  • Only 18 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals remain partially functional

These brave healthcare workers continue their mission to save lives, knowing the risks to themselves and their families. Thousands have been killed, injured, detained, or are missing. Their sacrifice deserves our recognition and support.

The Families Left Behind: A Hidden Crisis

When a healthcare worker is killed while serving their community, the tragedy extends far beyond the hospital walls. Behind every doctor, nurse, and paramedic that’s been killed, there is a family thrust into crisis, struggling to survive without their loved one.

Understanding Their Daily Struggles

The bereaved families of Gaza’s healthcare workers face multiple, compounding challenges:

Loss of Income and Stability Most healthcare workers were the sole breadwinner for their families. Their death leaves widows and orphans without financial support in an economy already devastated by conflict and crisis.

Unsafe Living Conditions Families struggle to find shelter in tents or damaged homes. They face constant forced displacement as they search for safety, moving from one precarious location to another with no sense of security.

Basic Survival Needs It has become a daily struggle to access or afford the essentials of life:

  • Food is increasingly scarce with famine rates rising
  • Clean water is difficult to obtain
  • Medication is nearly impossible to find or afford
  • Baby items and children’s necessities are beyond reach
  • Market prices continue to soar for what little remains available

The Sacrifice of Caregivers Perhaps most heartbreaking, caregivers – often widowed mothers – frequently skip meals so that their children and dependents do not have to go without. This self-sacrifice compounds their grief with physical hardship.

Aghosh UK's Response: A Programme of Dignity and Hope

At Aghosh UK, we believe in honouring the service of Gaza’s fallen healthcare workers by taking care of their families. Together, we can provide dignity, stability, and hope to those left behind, showing them they are not alone.

Our Commitment to 1,580 Verified Families

We have identified and verified 1,580 families of healthcare workers who have been killed while serving their communities. Each family has been thoroughly checked to ensure our support reaches those who need it most.

The Beneficiaries of This Gaza Healthcare Workers Appeal

The Islamic Imperative: Caring for Widows and Orphans

Supporting widows and orphans holds profound significance in Islam and represents a core Islamic duty. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of this care, saying: “I and the one who looks after an orphan will be like this in Paradise” – showing his index and middle finger together.

Why This Donation is Zakat Eligible

This Gaza healthcare workers families appeal is fully Zakat eligible. Widows and orphans are specifically mentioned among the eight categories of people deserving of Zakat in Islamic law.

When you give your Zakat to support these bereaved families, you are:

  • Fulfilling your religious obligation
  • Honouring those who served the ummah
  • Providing for the most vulnerable members of society
  • Following the prophetic example of caring for orphans

The healthcare workers who died were protecting their community, treating the sick and injured without regard for their own safety. Honouring their sacrifice by caring for their families is both a moral duty and an act of worship that brings immense reward.

It provides targeted, ongoing support to their bereaved families rather than general emergency aid. The monthly stipend model creates stability and dignity rather than one-time crisis relief.

The Urgency of Action: Why Your Help is Needed Now

Every day that passes without support is another day these bereaved families struggle with impossible choices. Every meal skipped by a widow so her children can eat. Every cold night in an inadequate tent. Every child asking when things will return to normal. These are the daily realities we can change together.

The healthcare workers who died gave everything in service to their communities. They continued treating patients under bombardment. They stayed at their posts when others fled. They chose to serve despite knowing the personal cost.

Now we have the opportunity – and the obligation – to honour their sacrifice by ensuring their families are not forgotten. We can show widows and orphans that their loved one’s service mattered, that the world remembers their sacrifice, and that they are not alone in their struggle.
