Learn How Aghosh UK & AlKhidmat Foundation Pakistan are improving the lives of vulnerable children
Street children in Pakistan represent one of the most vulnerable populations in the country. With an estimated 1.5 million children living on the streets, these young souls often find themselves devoid of necessities like food, shelter, and safety. Many of these children are forced to fend for themselves due to familial conflicts, poverty, or abandonment, often taking refuge in unsafe environments such as garbage dumps and railway stations. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for children’s charities to intervene and support this vulnerable population.
The reasons behind this issue are multifaceted. Poverty remains the primary driver, as many families cannot afford even the bare minimum for survival. Other contributing factors include domestic violence, broken families, child labour, and lack of access to education. These children often run away from abusive environments or are abandoned by parents who cannot care for them.
Life on the streets exposes children to unimaginable dangers. They face physical abuse, exploitation, and severe health risks due to malnutrition and lack of hygiene. Many fall victim to drug addiction, human trafficking, or child labour. Without intervention by humanitarian groups and children’s charities, these children have little hope for a brighter future.

Aghosh UK and AlKhidmat Foundation address the plight of street children through our Child Protection Centres (CPCs). These centres serve as safe havens where children can reclaim their lost childhood and build a foundation for a brighter future. The CPCs are designed to provide comprehensive support that addresses the multifaceted needs of street children, ensuring they have access to essential services that promote their overall well-being.
CPCs provide a structured and nurturing learning environment where children can attend classes tailored to their educational needs. The centres are equipped with academic resources such as books, stationery, and school bags, enabling children to engage in their studies effectively. Focusing on formal and informal education allows children to catch up on missed schooling and develop essential skills for their future.
Understanding the critical link between nutrition and cognitive development, CPCs ensure that children receive balanced meals daily. Proper nutrition is vital for the physical and mental growth of children, helping them to focus better in school and participate actively in learning activities. Providing them with nutritious food supports their immediate health and lays the groundwork for long-term well-being.
Playtime is an essential component of childhood, and CPCs facilitate recreational activities that help foster a sense of normalcy and community among the children. Through games, sports, and creative arts, children can express themselves, build friendships, and develop social skills in a safe environment. These activities are crucial for emotional healing and personal development, allowing children to experience joy and camaraderie.
Many street children endure traumatic experiences that can hinder their emotional growth. Recognising this, CPCs offer psychological counselling services aimed at helping children heal from past traumas. Trained counsellors work with the children to rebuild trust in society, develop coping mechanisms, and foster resilience. This support is vital for their emotional stability and overall mental health.
Currently, 48 CPCs are operating in cities like Sheikhupura, Lahore, Peshawar and other areas across Pakistan. The impact of AlKhidmat’s Child Protection Centres extends beyond immediate support; it contributes to breaking the cycle of poverty that many street children face. By providing education, nutrition, recreational opportunities, and psychological support, CPCs empower these children to envision a brighter future for themselves. They are not just receiving care; they are being equipped with the tools necessary to become self-reliant individuals who can contribute positively to society.

Abdul Museeb hails from Wazir Colony in Peshawar and is one of six siblings. His father, once a security guard, could no longer work due to old age and weakness, leaving the family in a precarious financial situation. To support his household, Museeb took on the role of a junk collector while also working contractually to fund his education. However, the burden of financial responsibilities forced him to abandon his studies temporarily.
Thanks to the intervention of the Aghosh UK Child Protection Centre, Museeb was able to resume his education. The centre provided him with essential resources including books, classes, and supplies. His hard work and determination paid off when he excelled in his exams, achieving the highest scores in his school. Museeb’s story exemplifies how access to education can change lives and inspire hope for a brighter future.

Usman comes from a low-income household where he had to assist his mother, who works as a cleaner in various homes. Despite the challenges he faced, Usman’s dreams remained intact. AlKhidmat’s Child Protection Centre stepped in to provide him with books, stationery, and classes that allowed him to continue his education.
With the support he received, Usman is now focused on his studies and aspires to grow up and serve his country. His story highlights the importance of educational support in empowering children from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue their dreams.

Sudas’s father works as an electrician but struggles to afford his son’s education. To help out, Sudas often assisted his father with work instead of attending school. Recognising the family’s desire for Sudas to receive an education, Aghosh UK stepped in to fulfil this need by funding his studies.
Now enrolled in school, Sudas has shown remarkable potential and demonstrates a keen ability to be a teacher. His journey underscores how targeted support can unlock a child’s potential and transform their aspirations into reality.
