Find Out More About How You Can Help Orphans in 2025
In Pakistan, over 4.2 million children are orphans, many of whom face a daily struggle for survival. These vulnerable children often lack access to necessities such as food, education, and healthcare. Without a stable family or support system, they are at greater risk of exploitation, malnutrition, and poor mental and physical health. The magnitude of this crisis demands urgent attention and compassionate action. Thankfully, Aghosh UK, a registered UK charity, is working with the Alkhidmat Foundation to improve the lives of orphans through various programmes in Pakistan and beyond.
AlKhidmat Foundation Pakistan, through its flagship Aghosh Homes project, has emerged as a beacon of hope for orphaned children across Pakistan. With a mission to provide a nurturing environment that mirrors the care of a loving home, Aghosh Homes offers unparalleled facilities, including quality education, health services, and personal development programmes. This initiative is not just about shelter—it’s about empowering these children to rise above adversity and build a brighter future.
AlKhidmat’s Orphan Care Programme, which has supported over 29,000 orphans in the past year, demonstrates a scalable and sustainable model of orphan care. From academic scholarships to vocational training for guardians, the programme ensures holistic support that uplifts entire families. Every donation and act of kindness brings these children closer to a life of dignity and opportunity.
The orphan crisis in Pakistan is an escalating humanitarian concern. According to a UN survey, there are more than 4.6 million orphan children in Pakistan, with countless others living on the brink of vulnerability. The sheer magnitude of the problem reveals systemic challenges that demand urgent action and long-term solutions.
● Economic Disparities: Families living in poverty are unable to provide for children after the loss of a parent, often forcing children into child labour or homelessness.
● Natural Disasters: Pakistan has experienced devastating floods, earthquakes, and climate-related crises, which displace families and leave thousands of children orphaned annually.
● Conflict and Instability: Armed conflict in certain regions has led to an increase in orphaned children as families are torn apart.
The overwhelming scale of these challenges emphasises the urgent need for initiatives like Alkhidmat Foundation’s Aghosh Homes, the Orphan Care Programme, Child Protection Centres and our other initiatives, which provide shelter and a pathway to hope and opportunity.
Orphans in Pakistan face numerous dangers due to the absence of parental protection and societal safety nets. Nearly 3.3 million children are engaged in child labour, with many forced into exploitative conditions such as trafficking and domestic servitude. Without access to adequate healthcare, malnutrition affects 40% of children under five, leaving orphans particularly vulnerable to severe health issues and developmental delays. Emotional trauma compounds these hardships, as the loss of parents leaves many children without emotional support systems, resulting in a higher prevalence of anxiety, depression, and long-term psychological scars. The lack of care and opportunity perpetuates a cycle of poverty and vulnerability, making targeted interventions like Alkhidmat Foundation’s Aghosh Homes critical to their survival and growth.

Orphans in developing countries encounter several critical challenges that significantly impact their lives:
Poverty and Lack of Basic Needs
Orphans often live in extreme poverty, with 153 million children globally lacking financial support for necessities like food and shelter.
Limited Access to Education
Many orphans are unable to afford school fees or supplies, resulting in limited educational opportunities and a cycle of poverty.
Vulnerability to Exploitation and Abuse
Due to their lack of protection, orphans are at heightened risk for exploitation, including 7% being trafficked into the sex industry.
Psychological Trauma
The loss of parents can lead to significant emotional distress, with many orphans experiencing grief, anxiety, and depression.
Stigma and Discrimination
Orphans often face social stigma, leading to feelings of isolation and low self-esteem within their communities.
Lack of Legal Protection
In many developing countries, orphans lack legal rights and protections, making them vulnerable to exploitation and hindering access to resources.
To address these challenges, Aghosh UK & Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan (AKFP) have implemented the Aghosh Homes Project, widely recognised as the best orphanage programme in Pakistan. These homes are designed to provide orphaned children with holistic care in a nurturing, family-like environment, ensuring their physical, emotional, and social safety and development.
