At least 1,580 healthcare workers have been killed serving their communities in Gaza. Behind every fallen doctor, nurse, and paramedic is a bereaved family struggling to survive. This is how we can help.
As the first of the last 10 nights of Ramadan 2025 begins this Thursday, may Allah (SWT) allow us to witness and benefit from these blessed nights. With the upcoming fundraiser keeping us busy tomorrow, I wanted to take a few moments tonight to share a quick refresher—10 key ways we can make the most of the next 10 nights.
Some of these tips may be familiar, while others might be overlooked in previous years. For those experiencing Ramadan for the first time, I pray that these suggestions serve as a source of benefit.
One of the most underestimated ways to maximize the last 10 nights is to avoid sins during the day. If you disobey Allah (SWT) during the day, it can hinder your ability to engage in worship at night. The doors of the heavens open for those who seek Allah’s mercy, but sin can close those doors. Be especially mindful of your actions during the day, as you do not want to enter the night carrying sins that may displease Allah.
2. Avoid Idle Conversations at Night
During the day, we naturally have responsibilities—work, socializing, and family duties. However, the nights of the last 10 days should be dedicated to worship. Many blessings are lost due to excessive social interactions at night, leading to gossip or backbiting. If you haven’t had your iftar gatherings yet, consider avoiding them in the last 10 nights. Instead, prioritize gatherings that involve remembering Allah (SWT) and avoid unnecessary conversations that distract from worship.
5. Increase Your Recitation of the Quran
The last 10 nights are a time to immerse ourselves in the Quran. The righteous predecessors would increase their recitation significantly during these nights. If you had a Quran goal for Ramadan, aim to surpass it. If you were reading a juz‘ a day, push yourself to read more at night. The first word revealed on Laylatul Qadr was “Read” (Iqra), emphasizing the importance of Quran recitation on these nights.
6. Recite the Special Dua for Laylatul Qadr
Aisha (RA) asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) what to recite if she encountered Laylatul Qadr. He taught her this dua:
“Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa fa‘fu ‘anni”
(O Allah, You are the Most Forgiving, and You love to forgive, so forgive me.)
Recite this dua frequently throughout the night, at the beginning, middle, and end of your prayers.
7. Make Dua Even While in Motion
Treat every moment of these nights as an opportunity for dua. Whether you are walking, driving, or waiting in line, keep your tongue engaged in remembrance of Allah. Just like during Hajj, where every second is valuable, approach these nights with the same mindset—maximize every moment with dua.
8. Increase Your Prostration (Sujood)
The closest a person comes to Allah is in sujood. The best part of the night prayer is the sujood, so lengthen your prostrations and pour your heart out in dua. The Quran tells us, “Prostrate and draw near [to Allah]” (Surah Al-‘Alaq, 96:19). Take your duas into your sujood and stay in that state for as long as possible.
9. Give in Charity Every Night
While there is no specific hadith stating that the Prophet (PBUH) gave more charity in the last 10 nights than the rest of Ramadan, we know that he was the most generous in Ramadan. Charity has two key effects:
Launch My Ten Nights Daily Giving
On a night when we seek Allah’s forgiveness and increase in rewards, what better action than charity? If possible, automate your donations to ensure you give every night of the last 10 nights, so you don’t miss Laylatul Qadr.
10. Spend the Last Few Moments Before Fajr in Seeking Forgiveness
Allah (SWT) describes the righteous as those who seek forgiveness in the last moments of the night. Many people stay busy with suhoor and conversation until Fajr, missing out on the crucial last moments of dua. In those last 5-10 minutes before Fajr, sincerely ask Allah for forgiveness and acceptance of your worship. It could be that one dua in those final moments secures you a lifetime of rewards.
Final Thoughts
Oh Allah, allow us to observe Laylatul Qadr. Oh Allah, allow us to observe Laylatul Qadr. Oh Allah, allow us to observe Laylatul Qadr.
These last 10 nights are a special time for our community—a time of immense blessings, mercy, and tranquility. Let us dedicate ourselves to worship, maximize every moment, and seek Allah’s forgiveness sincerely.
May Allah (SWT) accept our deeds, bless our efforts, and allow us to witness and benefit from Laylatul Qadr. Ameen.
