What is the Day of Ashura?

Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The word “Ashura” is derived from the Arabic word “Asharah,” meaning “ten.” This blessed day holds great importance in Islam due to several historical and religious events associated with it.

According to Islamic tradition, Allah (SWT) saved Prophet Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh on this day. Out of gratitude to Allah, Prophet Musa (AS) fasted on Ashura. When Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) learned of this practice, he encouraged Muslims to fast on this day as well.

Ashura is a time for spiritual renewal, increased worship, seeking forgiveness, and helping those in need.

When is the Day of Ashura 2026?

The Day of Ashura in 2026 is expected to fall on Friday, 26 June 2026, corresponding to the 10th of Muharram 1448 AH. However, the exact date may vary depending on the sighting of the moon in different countries.

Muslims are encouraged to prepare for this blessed day by increasing their worship, fasting, and charitable activities.

Importance of Ashura

The Day of Ashura carries immense spiritual significance for Muslims around the world. It is a blessed day that reminds believers of Allah’s mercy, protection, and guidance. Ashura commemorates the day when Allah (SWT) saved Prophet Musa (AS) and his followers from the tyranny of Pharaoh, demonstrating His power and compassion for those who place their trust in Him.

This sacred day is also a reminder for Muslims to express gratitude to Allah for His countless blessings through worship, fasting, prayer, and good deeds. Ashura provides an opportunity to strengthen one’s relationship with Allah through increased acts of worship, including Quran recitation, remembrance (Dhikr), repentance, and sincere supplication.

In addition, Ashura encourages compassion and generosity towards those in need. Supporting charitable causes, helping vulnerable communities, and performing acts of kindness are highly rewarding on this blessed day. By observing Ashura with faith and devotion, Muslims can seek spiritual growth, forgiveness, and the pleasure of Allah (SWT).

Fasting on the Day of Ashura

Fasting on Ashura is a highly recommended Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) said that fasting on the Day of Ashura expiates the minor sins of the previous year, by the mercy of Allah.

To distinguish the Muslim practice from others, the Prophet (ﷺ) encouraged fasting either:

  • The 9th and 10th of Muharram, or
  • The 10th and 11th of Muharram

Many Muslims choose to fast on both the 9th and 10th Muharram to follow the Sunnah more closely
